Israel kills another Palestinian journalist, death toll rises to 214

Another Palestinian journalist has been killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza, taking the death toll since October 2023 to 214, local authorities said.

Yahya Sobeih, a journalist with a local news agency, was among 22 Palestinians killed in an Israeli strike on a crowded market in Gaza City, a medical source said. His death came hours after the reporter welcomed his newborn baby.

“You brightened our world, our little princess. Thanks to God who blessed us with the birth of our precious daughter,” Sobeih shared on his Instagram, with a photo showing the baby in his arms.

Greece, Egypt agree to boost ties, back Gaza reconstruction plan

Greece and Egypt signed a "strategic partnership" deal as they seek to step up political coordination amid the ongoing war in Gaza.

"Our bilateral cooperation is based on political, economic, and cultural ties, which are deeply rooted in history and defined by our strong commitment to the values of peace and the full respect of international law," Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a joint statement.

"The first priority is for hostilities to stop and restore the flow of humanitarian aid to civilians," Mitsotakis said, adding that Greece supported an Arab-backed plan for the reconstruction of Gaza once a ceasefire was achieved

Pro-Palestinian protests to be allowed at 2026 World Cup in US

Pro-Palestinian protests would be permitted at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, US President Donald Trump announced.

"People are allowed to protest. You have to do it in a reasonable manner, not necessarily friendly, but reasonable," Trump said when asked if people who have participated in pro-Palestinian protests should be concerned about attending the World Cup in the country during his first 2026 World Cup task force meeting, which included several Cabinet members and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Gaza declared ‘famine-stricken area’ as Israel blocks entry of food, aid

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa declared Gaza a “famine-stricken zone”, as Israel continued to block the entry of food and aid into the blockaded enclave.

"We demand all UN member states take urgent action according to their obligations under international humanitarian law, and recognise this disaster and famine," he said.

The Palestinian premier called on the international community to "implement UN resolutions that prohibit using starvation as a weapon of war."

Mustafa also appealed to the entire UN system to "immediately activate its mechanisms and treat Gaza as a famine zone."

UN experts demand action to avert 'annihilation' of Palestinians in Gaza

UN experts said that countries were at a moral crossroads over the conflict in Gaza, facing the choice between acting to halt the violence and witnessing "the annihilation of the Palestinian population" in the territory.

"The decision is stark: remain passive and witness the slaughter of innocents or take part in crafting a just resolution," more than 20 independent United Nations experts said in a statement, urging the world to avert the "moral abyss we are descending into".

Spain seeks 'urgent measures' at UN to 'stop killing' in Gaza: PM

Spain will present a draft resolution at the UN General Assembly aimed at "proposing urgent measures to stop the killing of innocent civilians and ensure humanitarian aid" in Gaza, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said.

Sanchez told the Spanish parliament that "the international community cannot remain indifferent to what is happening" in the Palestinian territory, where Israel resumed its offensive against Hamas in March after a two-month ceasefire.

The Socialist premier has been one of the most outspoken critics of Israel's devastating war in Gaza, which has caused shortages of food, water, fuel and medicine.

Germany's new leader urges Israel to allow humanitarian aid to Gaza

Germany's new Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Israel to meet its humanitarian obligations by allowing humanitarian aid to reach Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

“The developments in Gaza deeply concern us,” Merz said, adding: “While the Israeli government and military have a legitimate interest in countering Hamas terrorism, they also have a humanitarian obligation to the civilian population in Gaza,” he stressed.

He stressed that international humanitarian aid must reach Gaza's civilian population, pointing out that they are also victims of the conflict.

Israeli officials shocked by US-Houthi ceasefire: Media

A surprise ceasefire between the US and Yemen’s Houthi group has shocked Israeli officials, as Tel Aviv was unaware of efforts aimed at reaching such a deal, Israeli media said.

"We were completely shocked. Israel was not informed before (US President Donald) Trump made the statement," an Israeli official told the Jerusalem Post.

The Israeli daily said the ceasefire “doubly surprised Israel” as it came shortly after Tel Aviv received "a protective security umbrella" for its air strike on the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Tuesday.

The Times of Israel news portal, citing Israeli officials, said the US "didn't give Israel advance notice" before Trump's announcement.

An Israeli source familiar with the matter, speaking to Israel Hayom newspaper, described the ceasefire announcement as "very bad news for Israel," particularly amid the ongoing US negotiations with Iran.

Saudi Arabia welcomes US-Houthi ceasefire deal

Saudi Arabia welcomed a deal brokered by Oman ending hostilities between the United States and Yemen's Houthis following weeks of air strikes by American forces.

Saudi Arabia "welcomed the statement issued by the Sultanate of Oman regarding the reaching of a ceasefire in Yemen with the aim of protecting international navigation and trade," the foreign ministry said in a statement, referring to Houthi strikes on Red Sea shipping.

UK premier concerned over dire situation in Gaza, occupied West Bank

The British prime minister expressed concern over the dire situation in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, saying a lack of aid is affecting hundreds of thousands of people.

"It is becoming increasingly intolerable, and I am deeply concerned, particularly about the lack of aid that is being delivered and the impact it is having on tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people," Keir Starmer said in response to a question during the weekly Prime Minister's Questions in parliament.

He noted that he recently reaffirmed this concern to Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, asserting that a two-state solution is the only viable path to peace.

"Our focus is on delivering peace for Palestinians and Israelis, returning to the ceasefire, getting the hostages out and humanitarian aid in that is desperately needed in greater numbers and more quickly," added Starmer.
