Netanyahu nominates Eli Sharvit as new Shin Bet chief amid controversy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated a new domestic security chief, after he moved to fire the current one over a crisis of confidence that critics say was politically motivated.

Netanyahu named former Navy commander Vice Adm. Eli Sharvit to lead the agency, which surveils and thwarts attacks from Palestinian resistance groups.

Earlier this month, Netanyahu moved to fire Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, a step that sparked an uproar in Israel.

ICRC condemns Israel's killing of medics in Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) condemned the deaths of eight paramedics from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, five Gaza Civil Defense first responders, and a UN staff member in Rafah, southern Gaza.

The medics were targeted on March 23 as they headed to provide first aid to wounded individuals from Israeli shelling in the Al-Hashashin area.

"These staff and volunteers were risking their own lives to provide support to others," it added.

Lebanon makes arrests over rockets fired at Israel

Lebanese authorities said several suspects had been arrested after rockets were fired at neighbouring Israel earlier this month, testing a fragile November ceasefire.

Lebanon's General Security agency said it had "arrested a number of suspects, and the relevant authorities have begun investigations with them to determine responsibility and take the appropriate legal measures".

US air strikes on Yemen's Sanaa kill 1, injure 5, say Houthis

One person was killed and five others were injured in US air strikes in the northern part of Yemen’s Sanaa, according to a statement from the spokesperson for the Houthi-run Ministry of Health.

The statement, issued hours after the Houthis first reported the strikes, said four air raids targeted the Jadar area in Bani al-Harith district, north of the Yemeni city.

It added that “most of the victims are civilians,” while noting that the casualty toll remains preliminary.
