UN chief 'deeply alarmed' by Israeli strike on al-Ahli hospital in Gaza

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is "deeply alarmed" at Sunday's strike by Israeli forces on the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza, his spokesperson has said.

"Under international humanitarian law, wounded and sick, medical personnel and medical facilities, including hospitals, must be respected and protected," the UN chief's spokesperson said.

He said the attack dealt "a severe blow to an already devastated healthcare system in the Strip", adding there was strong concern that medical supplies are running low as well as food and water.

Netanyahu says 'intensive talks' underway on Gaza hostage deal

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that "intense talks" are underway to secure the release of hostages in besieged Gaza, as public pressure mounts following his decision to abandon a ceasefire agreement unilaterally and resume the war, according to a statement from his office reported by the Maariv newspaper.

It came shortly after Hamas revealed it is reviewing a new ceasefire and prisoner exchange proposal submitted by mediators, the group said in a statement.

The US State Department approved the potential sale of Eitan Powerpack engines and related equipment to Israel, the Pentagon said.

"The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to US national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defence capability," the Pentagon said in a statement, adding the proposed sale will enhance Israel's capability to meet "current and future" threats.

Hamas says will respond to Gaza ceasefire proposal after consultations

Hamas said that it would respond to a new Israeli proposal for a Gaza ceasefire after internal consultations, with a senior official telling AFP news agency the proposal crossed a "red line" on disarmament.

"Hamas affirms that its leadership is studying ... will present its response as soon as the necessary consultations are completed," the Palestinian armed group said in a statement.

Egypt delivers Israeli proposal to Hamas for temporary ceasefire in Gaza

Egypt sent an Israeli proposal to Hamas, calling for a temporary ceasefire in besieged Gaza and the start of talks to secure a permanent truce, according to Egypt's Cairo News channel.

The channel reported that Egypt received the Israeli plan and forwarded it to Hamas, which is now awaiting a response from the Palestinian resistance group.

Over 9,500 Israeli academics, teachers and medics sign petitions to release hostages held in Gaza

More than 9,500 Israeli academics, teachers, and medical professionals, as well as approximately 1,000 parents, signed petitions urging the government in Tel Aviv to secure the release of hostages held in besieged Gaza, even if it meant ending the war in the enclave.

According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, approximately 3,500 academics signed a petition supporting a previous letter from Israeli Air Force reservists demanding the return of the hostages and the end of the war.
