Palestinians observe Prisoner's Day as Israeli jail abuses reach unprecedented levels

As of early April, 9,900 Palestinian detainees are still languishing in Israeli jails amid escalating reports of torture, abuses, and unprecedented violations against them that have increased since the start of Israel's genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023.

Marking the Palestinian Prisoners’ Day, the Palestinian Prisoner Society highlighted the harsh situation the Palestinian detainees, including women and children, are experiencing in Israeli jails amid a lack of effective oversight by rights groups.

Amputee Palestinian boy image wins World Press Photo award

A haunting portrait of a nine-year-old Palestinian boy who lost both arms during an Israeli attack on Gaza City won the 2025 World Press Photo of the Year Award.

The picture, by Samar Abu Elouf for The New York Times, depicts Mahmoud Ajjour, evacuated to Doha after an explosion severed one arm and mutilated the other last year.

"One of the most difficult things Mahmoud's mother explained to me was how, when Mahmoud first realised that his arms were amputated, the first sentence he said to her was, 'How will I be able to hug you?‘" said Elouf.

Israel using starvation as weapon against Palestinians: Hamas

Hamas has accused Israel of attempting to starve the population of Gaza following Israel’s renewed declaration the previous day that no humanitarian aid would be allowed into the Palestinian territory.

"This is a public admission of committing a war crime, including the use of starvation as a weapon and the denial of necessities such as food, medicine, water, and fuel to innocent civilians for the seventh consecutive week," the Palestinian resistance group said in a statement.

One more Palestinian detainee dies in Israeli prison

Another Palestinian detainee from the occupied West Bank city of Nablus died in Israeli detention amid accusations of Israeli ill-treatment of Palestinians in Israeli jails, prisoners’ affairs groups said.

Detainee Mosab Audaily, 20, was serving a 13-month sentence in Israeli jails, where he was pronounced dead last night at the Soroka Medical Centre in Beersheva in southern Israel, the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner Society said in a joint statement.

The statement noted that Audaily was detained on March 22, 2024, and was scheduled to be released after three days.

Israel kills at least 37 Palestinians in overnight strikes

Gaza's civil defence agency has reported that a wave of Israeli air strikes hit multiple encampments for displaced Palestinians across the territory, killing at least 37 people.

Agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal said an overnight strike targeted several tents in the Al-Mawasi area of the southern city of Khan Younis, resulting in 16 deaths.

"At least 16 martyrs, most of them women and children, and 23 others were wounded following a direct strike by two Israeli missiles on several tents housing displaced families in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis," Bassal told AFP.

According to Bassal, two additional strikes on other encampments of displaced people killed eight and wounded several more.

Seven were killed in a strike on tents in the northern town of Beit Lahia, while another attack near the Al-Mawasi area killed a father and his child who were living in a tent, Bassal said.

500,000 displaced in Gaza after Israel resumes attacks: UN

Around 500,000 Palestinians have been displaced in Gaza since Israel resumed an offensive following the breakdown of a ceasefire with the Palestinian group Hamas, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has said.

The Israeli army renewed its assault on Gaza on March 18, shattering a January 19 ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement.

Nearly 51,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in a brutal Israeli onslaught since October 2023, most of them women and children.

The Israeli army demolished the home of the family of two Palestinian brothers killed last year near Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA said that Israeli forces destroyed the home of the Hasas family, whose members Hemam (23) and Haris (19) were killed in July last year.

North Korea accuses Israel of seeking to seize Gaza

North Korea accused Israel of explicitly seeking to seize Palestinian territories, criticising its renewed strikes on besieged Gaza.

The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) issued the commentary after the Israeli army renewed a deadly assault on Gaza on March 18, shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement with the Palestinian group Hamas that took hold in January.
