Palestine's Abbas names top aide as PLO’s first vice president: official

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas appointed a close aide as the first ever vice president of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), according to a member of the organisation's executive committee.

Houthis claim ballistic missile strike on Israel's Nevatim Airbase

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a televised statement that the missile "successfully reached its target and the interception systems failed to stop it."

UNRWA warns of disease outbreaks due to waste accumulation in Gaza

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) warned of the growing risk of disease outbreaks in Gaza as a result of massive waste accumulation.

"The war in Gaza is leading to a significant accumulation of waste, which contributes to the spread of disease,” UNRWA said in a statement, adding that it “continues to provide solid waste collection and transfer services wherever possible.”

UNRWA teams have also “cleaned 150 manholes, serving over 23,000 displaced people.”

The waste crisis has been exacerbated by Israel's blockade, which has prevented municipal crews from reaching main dumping sites, often located in Gaza’s eastern outskirts, and by the near-total shutdown of services following the closure of crossings and the ban on the entry of aid and fuel into the territory.

The UN organisation renewed its call for Israel to immediately lift its blockade on Gaza and to resume a ceasefire.

Palestinian shot by Israeli army in West Bank succumbs to wounds

The Palestinian Health Ministry announced the death of a young man from injuries sustained by Israeli army gunfire.

In a statement, the ministry said Ahmad Ibrahim Nassarrah, 32, succumbed to critical wounds he sustained in the town of Beit Furik, east of Nablus, nearly two months ago.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces also conducted several overnight raids, injuring two Palestinians, including a child, and arresting four others in different towns across the occupied West Bank.

According to the Wafa news agency and the Palestinian Information Center, the raids targeted areas in Hebron, Bethlehem, and Ramallah.

Separately, in Sinjil, northeast of Ramallah, a Palestinian man was shot in the chest during clashes with Israeli forces as illegal settlers tried to advance.

At least 27 Palestinians were killed and several others wounded in the latest Israeli air strikes across Gaza, sources and officials said.

In one of the attacks, an Israeli air strike targeted a cafe in the city of Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, killing four Palestinians, a medical source told Anadolu.

Another air strike targeted a gathering of civilians northwest of the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, killing one Palestinian, according to a statement from Al-Awda Hospital.

According to medical sources, 10 of the victims were killed when an air strike hit a home belonging to the al-Khour family in the Sabra neighbourhood, south of Gaza City.

Israeli air strikes on Gaza killed at least 56 more Palestinians, bringing the death toll from Israel’s genocidal war since October 2023 to 51,495, the Health Ministry said.

“Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them,” it added.

Hamas says open to 5-year Gaza truce, one-time hostages release

Hamas is open to an agreement to end the war in Gaza that would see all captives released and secure a five-year truce, an official said ahead of talks with mediators.

The Hamas official, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the Palestinian resistance group "is ready for an exchange of prisoners in a single batch and a truce for five years".

The latest bid to seal a ceasefire comes after Hamas rejected an Israeli proposal earlier this month, denouncing it as "partial" and insisting on a "comprehensive" agreement that would genuinely end the war since October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.

Israel says intercepted missile from Yemen, drone 'from the east'

Israel's military said it had intercepted a missile fired from Yemen, whose Houthis have launched attacks throughout the Gaza war, as well as a drone approaching "from the east".

"Following the sirens that sounded recently in several areas in Israel, a missile that was launched from Yemen was intercepted" before "crossing into Israeli territory", a military statement said.

In a statement, Hamas said its vision is based on achieving a "comprehensive deal, which includes a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the reconstruction of the enclave.”

The movement added that its delegation will also discuss “the impact of Israel’s starvation policy in Gaza and stress the urgent need to deliver humanitarian aid, including food and medicine, to the territory.”
