Situation in Gaza 'extremely volatile' as Israel kills 250 Palestinians: UN

A UN spokesperson has expressed concern over the "extremely volatile" situation in Gaza as Israel's operations are ongoing.

"The intensification of operations by Israeli forces comes after several displacement orders were issued for areas in North Gaza, Deir al Balah, and Khan Younis governorates in the past three days.

"The situation remains extremely volatile and unpredictable," Stephanie Tremblay said at a news conference.

In northern Gaza, Tremblay said some 17,000 people have been displaced so far from Jabalia and Beit Lahia since Thursday afternoon.

At least 250 people have reportedly been killed in the past 36 hours, she said, citing the Ministry of Health in Gaza.

Gaza situation is intolerable: France's Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed that he felt the humanitarian crisis in Gaza was unacceptable and added he hoped to discuss the matter soon with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump.

Israel threatens to target Houthi leadership

Israel has threatened to target the leadership of Yemen's Houthis after it struck two ports, following repeated Houthi missile attacks in recent days.

The Houthis agreed earlier this month to stop firing on international shipping in the Red Sea.

But the Houthis vowed to keep up their strikes on Israel despite the deal and fired three missiles in as many days this week that triggered air raid warnings in major Israeli cities.

Arab League confirms international conference on 'two-state solution' for next month

A senior Arab League official has confirmed that an international conference on a two-state solution for Palestine will be held in June under the joint chairmanship of Saudi Arabia and France.

"The conference on recognising the State of Palestine will be held from June 17 to 20, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France," Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League Hossam Zaki said at a press conference in Baghdad, where the 34th Arab Summit was held on Saturday, but did not specify the location of such a significant event.

Council of Europe slams Israel's 'deliberate starvation' of Gaza

The Council of Europe has said Gaza was suffering from a "deliberate starvation".

"The time for a moral reckoning over the treatment of Palestinians has come – and it is long overdue," said Dora Bakoyannis, rapporteur for the Middle East at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Since March 2, Israeli forces have blocked all humanitarian aid from entering Gaza for its 2.4 million inhabitants, now threatened with famine.

"No cause, no matter how just or pure, can ever justify every means," Bakoyannis said in a statement.

"The mass killing of children and unarmed civilians, the deliberate starvation, and the relentless pain and humiliation inflicted upon Palestinians in Gaza must end."

Gaza facing critical hunger as Israel blocks aid, decimates agriculture: report

Palestinians in Gaza are at a critical risk of full-blown famine as Israel’s unrelenting war has decimated almost any capacity for local food production, and its total blockade on humanitarian aid deprives the population of basics vital for survival, a leading global food security expert has warned.

“There has been such an extent of attacks on agricultural infrastructure that the agricultural system has largely collapsed in Gaza,” Conor Elliott, team leader at the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC), told Anadolu in an interview ahead of the launch of the Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) 2025.

According to the report, in Gaza, the famine that was projected in March 2024 was averted due to the scale-up of the humanitarian response; however, if the large-scale military operation and humanitarian and commercial blockade continue, acute food insecurity, malnutrition, and mortality will surpass famine thresholds from May to September 2025.

Hamas urges US to press Israel to lift aid blockade

Hamas has demanded that the United States press Israel to lift a sweeping aid blockade in return for a US-Israeli hostage released by the group.

In early March, shortly before the collapse of a two-month ceasefire in its war on Gaza, Israel reimposed a total blockade on Gaza, where aid agencies have warned of critical shortages of everything from food and clean water to fuel and medicines.

US President Donald Trump acknowledged that "a lot of people are starving" in the besieged Palestinian territory.

French president calls for ‘coherence’ in supporting Ukraine, Gaza

French President Emmanuel Macron has called on European leaders to show “coherence” in their response to the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, urging a unified diplomatic and humanitarian approach.

“I want us to collectively wake up here about the coherence we must uphold on these matters. Deep down, we can see it: all these situations show the need for peace, the obvious necessity of returning to diplomacy,” Macron said at the opening of the sixth European Political Community summit in Albania.

Referring to what he described as an “unacceptable humanitarian situation in Gaza,” Macron called for an “immediate ceasefire” and a coordinated humanitarian response.

UN slams Israeli-backed Gaza aid plan as 'cynical sideshow'

The UN humanitarian office has sharply criticised a proposed Israeli-backed aid delivery mechanism for Gaza, warning it would deepen suffering and set a dangerous global precedent by making humanitarian access conditional on political and military objectives.

Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told a UN press briefing in Geneva that the UN has held 14 meetings with Israeli counterparts on the proposed scheme, which he said would "exclude many, including people with disabilities, women, children, the elderly and the wounded."

"It forces further displacement. It exposes thousands—thousands of people to harm. It sets an unacceptable precedent for aid delivery, not just in the occupied Palestinian territory, but around the world," Laerke told reporters in Geneva.
