Israel moves to dismiss military doctors who signed petition for end to Gaza war

The Israeli army has begun punitive actions against reserve military doctors who signed a petition demanding the return of hostages from Gaza and the ending of the war in the Palestinian enclave.

In a statement, the signatories said that the Medical Corps has started measures to deter and isolate those who endorsed the letter.

Senior officials in the corps have been calling reserve doctors individually, urging them to withdraw their signatures or be dismissed.

Over 110,000 Israelis sign 37 petitions demanding Netanyahu end Gaza war

More than 110,000 Israelis, including military personnel, former police chiefs and civilians, have signed petitions pressing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza and end the war on the Palestinian enclave.

Dubbed "petitions of disobedience" by the Israeli media, the movement began with a petition from Air Force personnel, including active, reserve and retired members, some holding senior ranks.

The petitions uniformly demand the return of the estimated 59 Israeli hostages in Gaza, 24 of whom are believed to be still alive, and a ceasefire.

The signatories, addressing Netanyahu, the Knesset (parliament), the military leadership, and the public, argue that the war's stated goals—retrieving hostages and ensuring security—remain unachieved.

They warn that continued fighting serves Netanyahu's "personal and political interests" rather than national security, risking the lives of hostages, soldiers and civilians.

Three killed in Israeli drone strikes in southern Lebanon

At least three people were killed in separate Israeli drone strikes in southern Lebanon, in the latest violation of a ceasefire agreement, Lebanese authorities said.

The Health Ministry said that one person died and another was injured in a drone strike in the town of Hanin in the Bent Jbeil district. One more Lebanese was killed and another injured when a drone hit a vehicle in the Wadi al-Hujeir area of the Marjaayoun district, the state news agency NNA reported.

The Israeli army, for its part, claimed that the attack in Wadi al-Hujeir targeted a commander in Hezbollah's Radwan Unit, without identifying him.

A third Lebanese died of his wounds sustained in an Israeli drone strike on his vehicle in the town of Aitaroun on Tuesday, NNA said.

'Absolute duty' to stand for Gaza, says Holocaust survivor questioned by UK police

An octogenarian Holocaust survivor who was questioned by British police for taking part in a pro-Palestine protest says he will not be silenced, insisting it is his "absolute duty" to speak out against Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza.

On January 18, Kapos joined thousands of demonstrators at a pro-Palestine rally in London, where several protesters were arrested. The 87-year-old, along with British actors Juliet Stevenson and Khalid Abdalla, was among those questioned by the Metropolitan Police.

In an interview with Anadolu, Kapos described that day as "particularly oppressive", suggesting the heightened police presence and arrests were part of a broader strategy to deter public dissent.

"I think it was a deliberate decision at high levels … It was designed to have a chilling effect," he said.

While his own police interview was "not impolite or difficult", he came away with the feeling that the questioning could have been arranged with the purpose to "trip people up so that they may say the wrong thing".

UN rights office stresses free speech protections amid US efforts to deport activist Mahmoud Khalil

The UN Human Rights Office voiced concern over the potential deportation from the US of Mahmoud Khalil, a former student at New York's Columbia University and Palestinian activist, warning that using peaceful expression and protest as grounds for removal could undermine core human rights obligations.

"We reiterate that everyone, regardless of their nationality or immigration status, must be able to fully enjoy their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, without fear of retaliation for their exercise," OHCHR spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan said in a statement to Anadolu.

Al-Kheetan's comments came after a US immigration judge ruled Friday that Khalil could be deported—a decision his attorney is set to appeal.

Activists project message 'Arrest war criminals' on Belgian government building over Netanyahu warrant

A group of activists in Brussels projected the message "Arrest war criminals" onto a Belgian government building after the premier said his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu would not be arrested if he entered Belgium.

The protest was confirmed by Belgian human rights NGO 11.11.11, which voiced outrage over the new prime minister's unwillingness to enforce international law.

"Such statements signal a dangerous disregard for international justice," the group said in a statement to Anadolu.

Gaza has become 'mass grave' of Palestinians and those helping them: Doctors Without Borders

As Israeli forces resume and expand their assault on Gaza by land, air and sea, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) denounced the mounting toll on Palestinian civilians and aid workers, saying the enclave has become a "mass grave" of Palestinians.

"Palestinian lives are once again being systematically destroyed," the MSF said in a statement.

It added that a series of deadly attacks over the past three weeks by Israeli forces "have shown a blatant disregard for the safety of humanitarian and medical workers in Gaza".

Singapore to deploy team to treat Palestinians from Gaza in Egypt

Singapore is sending off a nine-person team to Egypt to treat Palestinians from Gaza, said the Ministry of Defence.

The armed forces and Health Ministry "will deploy a contingent to provide medical care to Palestinians and other civilians from Gaza who are being treated in Egypt", the ministry said in an Instagram post.

Eight army personnel and one from the Health Ministry will work with Egyptian authorities to "pave the way for the deployment of the main team, supplies and equipment, which will likely take place in the following weeks", the ministry added.

This latest mission will permit the Palestinians to be treated in Egypt "many times more", compared to previous armed forces efforts, it said.
