The legislation was approved by a vote of 67 in favour and one against, with the opposition boycotting the early-morning session.

Israel's parliament, the Knesset, has 120 lawmakers.

The vote reflects Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's determination to push ahead with his controversialjudicial reform plan, which sparked one of the largest protest movements in Israel's history in 2023 before being overtaken by the war on Gaza.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced that he is barring former defence minister and Chief of Staff Moshe Ya'alon from participating in events held at Israeli military bases following Ya'alon's allegations that the army committed ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in besieged Gaza.

Ya'alon is "the man who claimed that Israeli soldiers are carrying out ethnic cleansing in Gaza, described the war as futile, and even implied he hopes Israel won't send soldiers to kill children in Gaza," said a letter that Katz received from the father of an Israeli soldier killed in Gaza and Matan Peleg, the head of the right-wing Im Tirtzu organisation.
